What’s inside? Inspiration.

Level: B2 and up

The first part of the worksheet is a self-directed set of four activities. Discussion on working with your family and little bit of pre-listening guess work.

After that students listen to the initial part of the interview and write down comprehesion questions for other students to answer.

Activity five, on the other hand, is a set of hardcore listening comprehension questions. A 20 yo girl calls the show to ask for advice on inspiration and motivation. Seems obvious and easy but… well check it out for yourself. My students found it pretty challenging.

Finally, a discussion on privilage and unfair advantage, based on the story of New Orleans. Before going into discussion, I suggest pre-teaching New Orleans’ tough history which resulted in residential segregation of the city.

Who knows me better?

Level: A1 and up

Works best with A1-A2 level primary school kids.

It’s an episode from world famous Sis&Bro. Karina is doing a who knows me better show with her dad and bro.

Procedure:

Pause the video after Karina asks a question.

Have your SS answer the questions so that it’s true for them. (e-g’: What’s your favorite food?)

Continue the video and pause after Karina’s dad and Ronald show their answers. Have SS guess who is right.

or just print out the worksheets let SS do the work 🙂

Summertime questionnaire!

Level: A1-B2

End of the school year coming up!!!

Finally, some time to actually get to know your students.

  • Great for kids, teenagers and adults from A2 to B2 level.

It is a printable questionnaire based on Szczepan Twardoch’s selection of essays titled How I didn’t become a poet.

twardoch

Procedure:

Get SS to work in pairs, groups or do a ‘speed dating activity’.

Distribute the worksheets. One per person if you want SS to make notes. One per group if you want to stay eco-friendly or love paperless classes J

Set time limit for each question. 30s per person worked best in my classes. Some questions seem to generate lots of controversy (e-g.: What do you look for in a boy/girl?) If your SS and you decide to do so, you may give some extra time for these.

Selling Slime Part 1

Level: B1+ and up

When I was thirteen, my biggest concern was to minimize amount of time studying, so that I could play computer games and watch tv.

In this episode, Gary talks to a slime entrepreneur, Maddie Rae. She’s 13yo and she probably makes more money, than you and I put together, doing something she loves.

Selling Slime!!!

Check it out!

btw. Gary doesn’t curse as much as usually 🙂

Trash Talk e01

Level: B2 and up.

Would you like to make a couple hundred $$$ extra?

Do you think your students would be interested in learning how to make $100 in 2-3 hours on Saturday morning?

Gary goes garage sale-ing and makes a pretty good show on the way. Filled with informal, real life language, proverbs, idioms,  phrasal verbs etc.

Authentic Interest  + Authentic language = Perfect Lesson!!!

Sarcasm

I knew that it was going to happen eventually. Gary Vaynerchuk is a great speaker and a fantastic source of content for ESL classes but, there are so many other speakers that limiting myself only to Gary felt wrong.

When I saw Ewa Błaszczak, my homie from Warsaw, Poland, giving a Tedx Talk about sarcasm, I knew that I will want to use it in my classes and share with you guys. Very interesting topic, some advanced vocabulary but also a  bit of accent and pronunciation issues.

Great content for self study and those upper-intermediate classes. Have fun and… put an END to sarcasm.

Episode 201

Level: B1+ and up

Liars, haters, trolls and stupid questions    vs.     nature, positivity and loving yourself.

Very intense episode and relatively simple activities to go with it.

Watch out!!! The final part Gary’s show is kind of lengthy and confusing. Only recommend the last activity for advanced students (C1).

Hustle

Level: B2 and up

Can hustling make you rich?

Can having 10000 followers make you rich?

Can being a ‘big fish in a small pond’ make you rich?

The video was recorded in 2014 so it’s well-aged, but surprisingly crisp and up-to-date. The video and worksheet are going to make a really decent listening lesson with quite a bit of discussion.
